How to Get Hired on The Apprentice

How to Get Hired on The Apprentice Ive gone through how not to get fired, which is a step in the right direction, but how about getting hired? Only one lucky contestant can land Alan Sugar as their business partner and win the final prize of a £250,000 investment in their business venture and hes not prepared to dish it out to just anyone. The winner of the competition will have to prove themselves as the strongest individual in the running; so here are a few qualities that they must demonstrate in order to come out on top: 1) Highly competent in business The whole purpose of the show is for Alan Sugar to find a budding entrepreneur who demonstrates promise and is worth investing a large sum of money in. Hes not going to take a gamble on just anyone, so the successful individual is going to have to prove themselves as competent in business. As one of the final stages of  the competition, contestants are asked to pitch a thorough business plan to Lord Sugar, which has the potential to make or break their chances; so it is essential that they have an educated understanding of how they intend on meeting their business goals. 2) A good professional manner A bad attitude is one of the biggest turn offs for Lord Sugar and many a contestant have been sent packing over the previous series because they failed to act professionally in tasks, as well as in the board room. A large part of business, is the ability to create and maintain contacts and if you behave in an unprofessional manner youre likely to cut ties with important connections. Whether it be in the workplace, a job interview, or at a networking event, it is incredibly important to  conduct yourself appropriately. 3) A profitable business idea Whatever the business idea may be, the most important factor is whether it has the potential to create a profit. Theres no point starting a business, if at the end of the day you are going to find yourself at a loss. Before pitching your business plan, it is essential that the required market research has been conducted and the costs and profit potential have been assessed thoroughly. 4) A strong USP For the business to be a success it must have a unique selling point (USP) or there wont be anything that will differentiate it from competitors. This could be an entirely new product or service, or alternatively taking an existing one and improving it or adding new features to it, that makes it unique to what other companies are providing. Lord Sugar started his own business at the age of just 21, so he knows a thing or two about business and wont invest in something he doesnt have faith in becoming a success. 5) Confidence Not to be mistaken with arrogance which a lot of the Apprentice contestants possess! In order to succeed, the contestant must have confidence in themselves, their abilities and their business plan. If they do not have faith in them self, it is unlikely that Alan Sugar will place trust in them as a business partner. An outgoing personality isnt entirely essential for business success, however it certainly helps when it comes to direct selling and presenting sales pitches with fortitude!

The Most Attractive UK Employers for Gen Y [STUDY]

The Most Attractive UK Employers for Gen Y [STUDY] Where do UK millennials and Gen Y want to end up in the workplace? What  industry, company and objectives  are most sought after? Our friends at Universum have asked 47,776 students around the country and here are some of the results of the study. Let’s start with the overall macro findings: Confidence is growing Students seem more confident this year. They typically choose in between 16 to 22 employers as places that they would consider working for. This year they are in the lower end of this interval: the average was 16. This means that they are pickier with their choices as well as more focused in getting information about those employers. This would also mean that those firms that have been more active towards students will get an advantage. Purpose in the workplace Students are keener on working for organisations that have a higher sense of purpose. This is growing year-on-year fast. Take law students as an example. In 2013, 29% said that they wanted to “be dedicated to a cause or to feel that I am serving a greater good”. In 2015 this figure has risen to 42%. It’s almost a 13% points increase. Energy and financial firms under pressure The press has been hard with the energy sector and the financial services firms this year. Some financial services firms also didn’t help themselves (too many scandals). In practice, what we see is that the firms in the energy and financial services drop in attraction, among business and engineering students. On the other end of this game, we see the Bank of England gaining attraction and the Financial Conduct Authority entering straight to position 72. Once again, the sense of purpose is showing its effects. Career goals It appears having a work/life balance is the most important career goal to business and commerce students in the UK. Secure and stable jobs and working internationally  are still clinging on to the 2nd and 3rd spot. The whole chart hasnt actually changed at all since last year. Most preferred industries Management and strategy consulting  is still the most interesting industry, tightly followed by banking and then media and advertising. The big risers this year include Fashion, Accessories and Luxury Goods as well as more traditional industries such as Insurance, Real Estate and Education and Scientific Institutions. Most preferred companies to work for You will not be surprised to hear that business and commerce students in the UK want to work for Google, Apple and J.P. Morgan. Goldman Sachs appear to be losing its allure slightly, together with Richard Bransons Virgin Group and Coca-Cola. Changes in the rankings At the company specific level, there are some interesting changes: J.P. Morgan beats Goldman Sachs in the business ranking, but is behind in all the other main fields of study (engineering IT, Natural Sciences, Humanities, Law) KPMG climbs 5 positions and beats EY Burberry enters straight to position 12. They beat LVMH by a landslide (LVMH drops from position 21 to position 27) Rolls-Royce is doing very well. Ahead of Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover in the business ranking; and closing the gap to Google among engineering and IT students Shell beats BP among business students (Shell goes down from position 50 to 55; BP goes down from position 46 to 68). In engineering, Shell is also ahead. Down from position 7 to 10; but BP is down from 9th to 14th Facebook is losing attractiveness. Down among engineering and IT students from position 16 to 21. And down from position 23 to 29 among business students Apple is also on the way down among engineering and IT students. Down to position 4th from 2nd position. Writing Tools, Part 3 - iPad Applications for Authors - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Writing Tools, Part 3 - iPad Applications for Authors - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career In less than a month, my Apple iPad, as I described in Part 1 and Part 2, quickly became an essential writing tool helping me save time building my brand by planning, writing, promoting, and profiting from published books. This is not to say, of course, that the iPad is a replacement for desktop or laptop computers. But, the iPad certainly complements them, adding a new dimension of convenience and usability that has recharged the way I work. The following is an informal survey of the primary iPad applications that I have grown to depend on. If youre already an iPad user, you undoubtedly have your own preferences and I encourage you to share your preferences and experiences with me and other Personal Branding Blog followers. The big surprise, of course, is how much value iPad applications offer. Most are free. The total cost of the apps listed below is less than $30. iPad mind mapping applications The ability to plan articles and books while riding in a car or watching Tivod reruns or Chelsea Handler late at night in bed has introduced a new level of convenience planning articles, blog posts, and upcoming client coaching calls. As always, the most important part of writing is what you do before you start to write! By spending 10 to 15 minutes creating a mind map of a project, and often-   spending another 5 minutes adding additional ideas before I start to write can save me an hour of writing time and false starts on a typical project. When I finish the mind map, I feel the hard work has already been done. I rely on two iPad applications, Mindo and MindManager. Mindo. Mindo is a startlingly easy to use iPad mind mapping application, available from iTunes for $6.99. Theres virtually no learning curve; once you master a couple of basic finger movements, youre ready to go. Mindos simplicity puts the focus on your ideas (much like iA Writer, below). Features include an excellent color palettes,   ease of sharing maps with others, and several built-in time-saving usability shortcuts. MindManager. The Swiss Army Knife of mind mapping, the free iPad app is the most capability when used in conjunction with a a Macintosh or Windows version of MindManager desktop or laptop. Features include ability to add start stop dates to commands, the most formatting options, excellent presentation capability, ability to create interactive PDFs, and online hosting. iPad writing applications Notes is one of my most often used iPad writing application. Often, I find myself taking notes of what Im looking at on a desktop computer. I have only downloaded 2 iPad writing applications: Office 2HD. I chose this $7.99 integrated application because it gives me the capability of creating and editing Microsoft Office documents: Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. The word processor has extensive formatting and file import/export capabilities. It also costs less than Apples iPages. iA Writer. Last night, I purchased Information Architects Writer on the basis of blog posts by Joel Friedlander, The Book Designer, Shane Kettermans Copyblogger survey of 8 iPad writing apps, reinforced by many others, including the LA Times and Fast Company. The designers goal was to put as little between you and your words as possible. Its only you and the words, especially if you use the Focus mode which blanks out everything except the 2 or 3 lines youre working on. The simple, uncluttered screen also allows you to display either the current word count or the estimated reading time for what youve written. At $9.99, this could be a gamechanger for me. (Ill keep you informed.) iPad utility applications When planning and writing, as well as doing online research or social media marketing, I frequently use the following applications: Evernote. Evernote eliminates the need to send files as email attachments when using more than one computer to complete a project. Dictionary. I frequently use this free iPad application to quickly locate alternative words and phrases. Minutes To Go. I use this as a writing tool by encouraging me to write as much as I can within a given amount of time. It can also be used to measure elapsed time. iPad reading and online research applications I extensively use two categories of iPad apps for reading and research, ebook readers and RSS readers Kindle. Amazons free Kindle application is essential. It allows you to access some, or all, of the Kindle ebooks youve purchased, and it syncs with your Kindle. You can start reading your book on the Kindle, and resume reading on your iPad at the same place. And vice versa. iBooks. This is another no-brainer. You can view PDFs by front cover or title, and organize, and easily reorganize, them into categories. Feeddler. Ive grown increasingly pleased with using the free version of Feeddler to track blogs in several categories. Ill probably soon update to the paid version which offers   a few time-saving advantages when adding new RSS feeds. I use Flipboard and Zite for leisure, serendipity, and also as inspiring examples of online professional publication design at its very best. In both cases, I can create personalized reflecting my interests. New Yorker. The free New Yorker app is a visual delight. Best of all, when you subscribe to the The New Yorker, you get free online access to every issue! iPad social media applications The impact of iPad applications like Twitter, Facebook, and Hootsuite has been significant. Theyve changed the way I approach social media. The apps free me from being chained to my computer when I want to follow, or contribute to, conversations and share my latest discoveries. The biggest contribution that the apps make is that I can make the most of social media, even if I only have a few minutes to share. What did I overlook? Writing is the cornerstone of personal brand building. The faster and easier you can write, the easier it will be to build your personal brand. If youre a newcomer to this series, heres where you can access Writing Tools, Part 1: Why Authors Need iPads and Writing Tools, Part 2: Living with an iPad. More important, if youre familiar with any of the above iPad writing tools, or if Ive inadvertently overlooked your favorite iPad writing or social marketing application, I encourage you to share your discoveries, experiences, and suggestions, below, as comments. PDF is the best text format out there â€" Top reasons why When it comes to text editing formats available at the moment, there are disputes over which format is actually the best but there are also disputes about what it means to be the best in this particular situation. Long story short there are multiple sides that claim different things. In this article we are going to look at the PDF format and what makes it a great pick for any kind of text editing necessity. While it’s not perfect and it has its flaws, many believe that the pros way overdo the cons and that the overall conclusion is a great, platform friendly format that is able to solve problems where it’s needed. But to convince ourselves of this we must look closer at what it is that PDF offers. This way we will be able to tell whether or not you should spend time learning how to compress your PDF file size for future uses instead of searching for another format. So you want to know why you should use PDF? If you want to know why you should use PDF instead of another format then you’ve come to the right place. In this category we strictly review the prime reasons for which PDF should be used. Many would agree that it is the best format for editing text documents in a professional and high quality manner meaning that it is optimal for being used at work where documents need to maintain a certain standard. PDF files are compatible with most machines and software meaning that it is able to run and accommodate most preferences in terms of technology. This is a great advantage as there is no need to potentially redesign your entire workflow with new tech or software just to make room for PDF. If you’re worried about running out of hard drive space then PDF will surely please you ads the format works to create the smallest documents possible. Whatever you say about PDF you certainly can’t say that it produces large files. This space economy has really boosted the popularity of PDF over the years. If you’re worried about confidential information slipping into the hands of the wrong people then you can encrypt your files by using the PDF format. It allows for security measures to be put in place so that no one unauthorized can edit the files. It’s really great in a business environment. However… Yes, there are many things that make PDF great but there are also things that don’t quite do it justice. It’s important to mention those as well. For starters, you might run into a cash problem, meaning that a lot of PDF services are paid. There are free ones too, but most premium ones cost. Also, there’s the matter of needing special software to be able to fully edit and manipulate such format files. It’s unlike other formats where you can seamlessly access and edit it.
